There were a number of flights we found from LAX to Vienna and then refined the search according to flights connecting through London. We are highlighting the United Airlines flight for 60k points.
We began our search with British Airways to get a flight from LAX to Vienna connecting through London. This flight which prices up at $647 in Economy, converts to 45.5k points plus $364 which is giving you a mere $0.014 per point. Between the exorbitant fees and poor points return this is not an inviting option.
Next we searched American Airlines. We found a $1,299 flight. At 45k points you are getting $0.0288, which matches points with British, without the fee, and double points value.
To redeem this flight, you can transfer your Chase or Amex points to British Airways Avios to book your American Airlines flight through British Airways. The transfer ratio is 1:1 for both Chase and Amex. This option requires a few steps and ensuring availability through British Airways before transferring your points.
Lastly, we searched United and found a practical option. At $1,706, this flight translates to 60k points plus $90 giving you $0.0284 per point. This is a much more palatable offering than British given the substantially lower fees and double the points value. We find that although you use 15k more points than on American, the booking process is simplified by the transfer partnership between Chase and United.
