Cheap Flights with Points
We started our search on Google Flights and found a couple carriers offering one-stop to Brisbane:
- American
- Qantas
So from here, we went onto those sites to find the least amount of points (and the best availability for booking).
Flights to Australia for 40k American Miles
Getting to Brisbane during Christmas is rough. There is not much availability on any of the sites we checked. We started on American, and found flights only for December 10th, which is a full 15 days before Christmas. The flight itself, however, was just 40k miles one-way in Economy, so if you are super flexible with traveling this is a great option.
Flights to Australia for 40k United Miles
To look for more availability, we hopped over to United, and found a flight on December 24th for 100k miles in Economy.
This flight was a bit expensive, so we changed up our dates by 10 days and were able to score a United flight for 40k miles.
How to Get 50k American Miles
Getting AA miles is really tough, since they are only a transfer partner of Marriott Bonvoy, and Bonvoy doesn’t have any major bonus category cards. You can get 2x, 3x by spending on Marriott properties, but they don’t have anything along the lines of the Amex Gold that earns 4X on dining.
So the best way to get American miles is by signing up for credit cards, and Citi / AAdvantage Executive World Elite Mastercard below has a 50k welcome bonus after spending $5k in the first 3 months.

How to Get 100k Chase Points
Based on the current cards you have, our recommendation is to get the Chase Ink Business Preferred Credit Card, which has an 100k sign up bonus when you spend $15,000 in the first 3 months, easily enough points for a 2 roundtrip flights in the US with bonus points left over.
