I’ve teamed up with Old Spice and their #smellegendary campaign to both attempt to answer any pressing hair product questions that guys may have and to help them look and smell great thanks to a new line of hair products geared directly towards them.
Pomades: If you are unfamiliar with pomade, it is a product usually made from mineral oil that helps keep your hair neat and slick. If you are still having trouble getting a mental image, picture a gelled look, but without the annoying crunchy feeling that most gels produce. They vary primarily depending on their level of hold, ranging from light-medium to hard holds and are used to group, chunk, and define the hair for a polished finish.
Gels: Like pomade, gel exists to help provide structure to an otherwise unruly head of hair. It also adds a “wet” look to hair, making you look fresh and clean without grease. You can go from spontaneous spikes to slicked back and professional with just this single hair product, which proves that its versatility is well worth the money you are paying for it. As a matter of fact, I just received the new Old Spice Swagger Gel and you can find a review of it down below!
Creams: For men who don’t have the naturally thick hair we all crave, pomades and waxes ca be a nightmare. I recommend using a hair cream instead. Although it doesn’t provide quite as much hold or shine, it does get the job done as long as it is used properly.
Mousses: Believe it or not, there are many mousse products on the market that are designed specifically for men with thinning hair. These products include hair thickening agents like rice protein and rosemary in order to stimulate hair growth. Even if that doesn’t interest you, mousse is a great way to achieve volume.
Serums: These work with curly hair for one simple reason: It softens your hair and adds unmistakable shine. Softening the hair is important because no one wants a head of unmanageable curls to deal with every single morning. With a few drops of serum, you’ll have a tamer, shinier head of hair than ever before.
Clays: Hair clay both controls and maintains frizziness, which is of the utmost importance when dealing with wavy or curly hair. As someone who deals with curly hair on a daily basis, I can tell you that more than half of the battle is dealing with the frizz. If you manage to cut down on the frizz with some hair clay, you have already won in my book.
Pomades: Because pomade’s primary focus is to control hair, it works exceptionally well on extremely curly heads. Simply rub a bit on your palm and style through either damp or dry hair for the look you want to achieve. Slick, mold, and shape until you’re happy with the look. It’s as easy as that!
Waxes: Very few people actually know the difference between wax and pomade, and for this reason, they are used interchangeably. I’m going to give you a quick tip though — If you are looking for hold, go with wax. Pomade is great for shaping and styling, but nothing is going to hold your style in place like some wax. Rub a bit in your palms to warm it up, then run it through wet hair to style. It’s that easy.
For some reason, there’s a negative connotation that follows guys around when it comes to grooming. It is long believed that it isn’t ‘cool’ or ‘manly’ to care about your looks, but Old Spice is changing the game with their new line of products.
The truth of the matter is that guys DO want to look good, but they want to do it in a way that makes it seem as though they don’t care at all. Old Spice’s Swagger Gel does just that for men who want to look good without putting in the necessary time and effort.
Swagger Gel offers high hold and moderate shine, giving you that perfect ‘just out of the shower’ look no matter the time of day. All you have to do is rub a small amount on your hands and work through damp or dry hair for styling that makes you look like a total celebrity.
It works exceptionally well when paired with the Swagger 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner.
In the course of our research, we came across the most commonly asked questions by guys regarding hair and have your answers below.
Benjamin Thigpen, the hair guru whose clients include Marc Jacobs, Nick Swisher, and Bruce Willis, to name a few, has some expert advice on how to avoid hat hair.
Adding too much hair gel can be an absolute nightmare. To get that perfect gelled up look without the dreaded gel crunch or product residue running through your hair, you shouldn’t apply more than a quarter size into your palm. If you have especially thin hair, try not to apply more than a nickel. If your hair is wild and curl, you may be able to go up to a silver dollar, but do not go beyond that.
Too much gel will leave your hair crusty and looking dirty, which is something that nobody wants.
Creams can be tricky, but all it takes is a bit of research and some practice to get your own perfect look. They work wonders for controlling frizz and getting rid of pesky flyaways, so it is extremely important that you get this down right.
To answer this question simply, yes it is good to use hair gel as long as you use it responsibly. Too often, people either use too much or use it improperly and their hair suffers the consequence. The quality of the gel should always be called into question, too. The better quality it is, the more you will be able to use without suffering flaking.
Pomade is a greasy, waxy either water or mineral based substance that is used to style hair. It is similar to a gel in that it keeps hold of hair nicely, but without the flaking and crunch that many gels give. It works best when you want to shape and slick the hair back in one direction.
Unlike pomades themselves, wax is the best product to use when you want to hold a hairstyle in place. It also lacks the grease that pomade gives off, which makes it a great alternative for those with naturally oily hair. Whether you are seeking a structured or spiky look, wax gets the job done.
Typically thicker in consistency than pomades, they take the life form of a sticky toothpaste or a tacky glue. They provide firm hold and a natural matte finish, once again providing a great alternative for a style that you want to see hold for hours.
