Spotting Autumn Trends: XXL Coat

Summer is slowly slipping into fall and whether we like it or not, stores are almost sold out of summer collections and are now piling up on autumn gear. Goodbye beachwear, hello coats and mittens! To make this transition as painless as possible and to inspire you for the upcoming season, we’ll write up a series of posts titled “Spotting Autumn Trends” including trends from the runway translated into wearable pieces from across the web. This way you’ll be prepared for the dropping temperatures and be able to snatch that “it” piece before anyone else does.

While watching tall men with sharp facial features and thick beards walk down the runway at Men’s Fashion Week in Paris we couldn’t get passed all the massive winter coats. According to all the high-street brands that currently dominate the runway it’s the number one trend for the upcoming fall. We spotted volume coats and jackets from New York to Paris, from Tom Ford to Louis Vuitton.

Tom Ford | Valentino | Louis Vuitton | Maison Martin Margiela

This essential piece of wardrobe that protects from cold and holds just as big expressive function as it does functional, comes in variety of shapes and sizes. It can be just as classy as it can be edgy. It can be camel colored with a fitted shape and old-Hollywood style or imitating a post-apocalyptic era where only the hybrids survive. Take Thom Browne for the reference.

However, these fall coats seem to have one thing in common. A coat is not just a coat anymore. It’s a shield, a warm shelter protecting from the diverse effects of environmental conditions. To hold such an important role it has to be big, thick and long. It has volume and therefore allows you to style it with thick knitwear underneath. Essential for cold winters in Alaska, but how about New York? Just as well!

Saint Laurent | Thom Browne | Ermenegildo Zegna | Haider Ackermann

From the variety of styles, such as this wool patterned coat from Hider Ackermann, and a quilted masterpiece from Ermenegildo Zegna, the washed-out overcoat from Maison Martin Margiela or aviator-looking coat from Tom Ford, there’s really no going wrong. As long as there’s some volume and length (the longer – the better) you’ll be winter ready. The shape goes from a very strict almost boxy one which will find its way on the business streets, to the cocoon shaped coats that have a hint of futuristic fashion in them. As mentioned they all give a feel of being there for protection, whether it’s for reasons of unpleasant weather or something much more personal.

Talking about style, each designer has his own take on this XXL trend. There’s as many options out there as tastes in dressing. There’s a shield for a soldier and a warm blanket for the snuggling kid. The sports coat for the jockey and a minimalist shape for the lovers of all things pure and clean.

Acne Studios | Damir Doma | Opening Ceremony | Raf Simons

As many trends before there can only be found a more toned-down version of the XXL coat on the shopping racks. For the more outrageous pieces head over to Farfetch or search online stores by the references above. We dug out a few pieces that will work in favor no matter what the occupation. If you don’t want to be the main attraction than go for something like Acne Studios or Saint Laurent and if you’re used to the spot light then by all means wrap yourself in the beautiful Uma Wang embroidered coat or choose to sport the Dsquared2 color-blocking one.
