History
The history of JACK SPADE has a side of romance to it, beginning with the merging of two iconic minds of Kate Spade and her husband Andy Spade. Kate is the designer and namesake of Kate Spade and Andy is the creative director. The two married in 1995 and lived in a loft in lower Manhattan. It was here where the idea of JACK SPADE came to life.
Driven by the idea to make the perfect bag; not overly precious yet not too simple. The design concept of this bag needed to be straightforward and utilitarian. They began by making messenger bags out of waxed cotton and heavy canvas so that this bag could be functional, durable and stylish. They first sold JACK SPADE bags to a hardware store in 1997 to prove it’s durability and give the name a reputation.
From this success, the Spades opened their first store in 1999 at 56 Greene Street in SOHO. Keeping their concepts true to their ideas, they sold basic yet stylish travel bags, trench coats and general merchandise. Overtime, JACK SPADE evolved into a specialty shop with quality made, simple, and purposeful designs that created very loyal and happy customers. Today JACK SPADE has 10 stores in the US and can be found in top department stores worldwide.
