How Unique Is Lapland? Let’s Find Out

One of the great wonders of the world, Northern Lights is a sight we’ve yet to discover, but in preparation for a (future) trip we will take, we wanted to give you guys a briefer on what to see and do when you visit.

It would be interesting to visit Santa’s hometown or have a close encounter with Rudolf’s kind. It would also be magical to watch a natural light show in the skies, as well as endlessly build a snowman or make snow angels. But apart from being the epitome of the Christmas spirit, the view of gently rolling snow landscapes and home of magical wonders, there are several other unique facts about Lapland.

Lapland is a region where the sun never sets

During the summer season particularly, the sun is visible for 24 hours in the region, and this phenomenon happens for 73 days annually. It is only in Lapland where you can get to experience days without darkness, especially if you visit sometime in June. For the rest of the year, however, the daylight is noticeably scarce.

Lapland is the best place to witness Aurora Borealis

Lapland is where you should go if you want to witness the awesome wonders of the Aurora Borealis. Northern lights holidays are becoming more and more popular these days as more people are now aware of this marvelous phenomenon. Aurora Borealis, or the Northern Lights, is one of the seven natural wonders of the world, and the perfect place to see this is within the Lapland region. Abisko National Park on particular is regarded as one of the best places in the world to have a perfect view of the spectacular lights because of its prevailing winds which inhibit cloud formation.

Lapland is a place where there are as many reindeer as there are people

It is only in Lapland where there is an equal number of reindeer and people. Many would find it fascinating that these gentle creatures, whose noses are designed to warm the air before it enters their lungs, live in the region harmoniously with the rest of the human population. However, since there are several of these animals in Lapland, it won’t come as a surprise that reindeer burgers are available at some local food stalls.

Lapland is a region famous for its local cheese

While there are other places that boast their cheese products, Lapland is unique for being the home to the squeaky cheese. This cheese got its name because of the particular noise it makes when people chew on it. Squeaky cheese is the oldest and most popular gourmet cheese in Finland which is best served with cloudberry jam, another one of the specialties in the region.

Lapland is a destination for eco-conscious travelers

The Icehotel can be found in Lapland and it is an embodiment of total recycling. During the summer, the entire hotel melts down and flows into the Torne River, only to be built again in the winter. Thus, it leaves no carbon footprint even if it is repeatedly being demolished and built.

In conclusion, a visit to Lapland may be deemed as one of the most incredible travel experiences you and your family may have. Apart from getting to enjoy Santa’s home, it is where you can bask in the view of the magnificent Aurora Borealis. The magical spectacle of this light phenomenon is sufficient enough to leave you in awe of the majestic wonders of nature, only witnessed in this region.
