How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore and a Scotsman, dropped in the middle of forgotten Spot in the Caribbean by providence, impoverished, in squalor. Grow up to be a hero and a scholar?
That spot was Nevis, the sister island to St. Kitts and it was this amazing island we would marvel at every morning from the deck of our villa at Belle Mont Farm.
Getting to St. Kitts is easier than ever with direct flights from NYC on Delta, United and American. I used a bank to American miles I had from a sign up bonus to book our arriving flight (with a stopover in Miami) and returned using Delta (by transferring miles from my Amex card). Belle Mont Farm itself is 45 minutes from the airport and nestled into a gorgeous rainforest mountainside. While it was 90 degrees on the beach, up on the property it was a delightful 78.
The property is made up of varying sized bungalows, from massive 5 bedroom options to our studio villa with a plunge poor, outdoor shower and soaking tub. One caveat: the toilet is outdoors and was fine once we got used to it, but we’d always prefer the loo to be indoors.
Food for the restaurant is provided by the organic farm onsite. You can schedule tours of the farm and watch for monkeys who are quite cute, but apparently can wreak havoc on the crops.
About a 15 minute drive from the resort is their beach restaurant, Arthur’s, which was absolutely delicious. Service can be a bit slow at times, but it was worth the wait for the delicious bbq chicken or the fish tacos. Plus, while I waited for my food I polished off a few Stag beers (known as “the mans’s beer).
We didn’t rent a car, but the staff provided free transportation to the beach, farm, golf course or anywhere else we wanted to go.
What initially drew us to this spot was the beauty of the property, and that certainly didn’t disappoint. Additionally, room rates for Thanksgiving break were only $225 for a private bungalow and pool.
The service, however, let us down. For dinner, it took 1.5 hours for a 3 course, simple meal, and I had to get up multiple times to check on my water, wine, etc. Also, like clockwork, the electrical generator would shut off around 5pm, which signaled it was time for dinner. Finally, the golf course only had 1/2 of a working hole, when the website mentioned all 18 holes. To me, these are small issues that can easily be fixed and we mention them in our review because we had an otherwise amazing stay and want to see the property flourish.
Overall, the staff was super friendly, we had an amazing relaxing stay and we look forward to returning in the future.
