Summer doesn’t just mean tanning on the beach, pool parties, patio drinks, and backyard BBQ afternoons. This season isn’t exclusive to amazing outdoor fun, summer means some amazing movies to watch inside the the theaters too.
Every year film companies and studios roll out their best offerings for the public to enjoy. The most anticipated movies are almost always slated for summer release. This season has already seen box office and critical hits like Jurassic World, Furious 7, The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Terminator: Genisys, and Mad Max: Fury Road. But don’t fret, the summer of awesome movies is far from over.
Here’s your guide to upcoming must-see summer movies, according to genre:
Paul Rudd’s first foray into blockbuster movies seems promising. This onscreen adaptation of Marvel superhero, Ant-Man, has all the trademark elements of an amazing Marvel movie. It has moments of humor, amazing stunts and special effects, but what sells this is the coolest suit ever, one that allows master thief Scott Lang to shrink into ant size and have superhuman strength.
Ghost Protocol is one of the best action movies in the past 5 years, no question about it. The follow-up to that and the fifth installment in the Mission: Impossible series is Rogue Nation. The film is centered on The Syndicate, long believed to be a myth, it is now Ethan Hunt’s mission to prove they exist and of course, to destroy them. Watch out for the jaw-dropping stunts.
Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, and Jamie Bell star in this reboot of the Fantastic Four. These 4 actors have all proved their chops in other more serious movies, like Whiplash or Fruitvale Station. I’m eager to see how they make these comic book characters larger-than-life. I don’t need to tell you that the effects and action scenes are stellar, just watch the trailer and see for yourself.
Don’t dismiss reboots. This reboot of the 2007 movie, Hitman: Agent 47 is radically different from the first movie. Rupert Friend really brings something new to the title character. A genetically engineered assassin? Sign us up.
Amy Schumer + Bill Hader. That’s pretty much a guaranteed good time. A different take on the rom-com, Trainwreck gives us the best thing all summer, that is Lebron James in the token best friend role.
80s video games sent by aliens to take over Earth. Kevin James and Adam Sandler. Peter Dinklage as a Donkey Kong champion with an awe-inspiring mullet. What’s not to love?
A continuation of the National Lampoon’s Vacation movie series, Ed Helms plays Rusty, the grown-up son of Clark Griswold. He wants to recreate some childhood memories by going to Walley World, his favorite park when he was little. Cue the roadtrip hijinks.
There’s not much to say about this sequel to 2012′ Sinister. The trailer is terrifying enough.
Emma Watson and Ethan Hawke headline this psychological thriller directed by Alejandro Amenabar. Watson plays the victim. Her father confesses out of the blue, and an investigation into a chilling mystery follows.
Jake Gyllenhaal beefed up and put in his time at the gym to play the boxer Billy Hope. Directed by Antoine Fuqua, this is a story about the successful boxer, Hope, and how he lost everything and struggled to get it back. You can’t go wrong with a film about redemption.
More than just being about the origins and the getting-famous story of NWA, Straight Outta Comption also reveals the racial tensions in Los Angeles.
If you loved Gone Girl, then get hyped for Dark Places. Starring Charlize Theron as Libby Day, the only survivor of her family’s massacre, the movie chronicles the main character’s quest for the truth as to what happened the night of the murder.
Adapted from the 60s TV series with the same name, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. has so many things going for it, chief of which is slick director Guy Ritchie at the helm. Set in the Cold-War era, the action is elegant and stylized. Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer play two agents from the U.S. and Russia respectively, forced to work together to foil a criminal organization plot.
