Mint Juleps- The Reason We Love The Kentucky Derby

This weekend marks the only two days each year that almost 120,000 mint juleps are sold. Yes we are talking about the Kentucky Derby this Saturday, May 3rd. We are always looking for a reason to party and the Kentucky Derby gives us a perfect excuse to sit back, relax, and consume the brownest of the brown liquors. You don’t have to travel to Louisville to get the Kentucky Derby experience this year, bring the race to you with this classic Mint Julep recipe.


What You’ll Need

  • 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves
  • 2 cups water, heated
  • 2 cups sugar
  • crushed ice
  • bourbon (lots of it)

How To Make It

Syrup: Heat water. Whisk in sugar and heat until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat. Add mint and let the mixture steep for 20 to 30 minutes.

Mint Julep:  Add cracked or crushed ice to Julep tumbler or glass. Add 1 1/2 ounces of Kentucky Bourbon. Add 2 1/2 teaspoons syrup, or to taste. Stir lightly. Garnish with fresh mint leaf and serve with a straw.
