What Does SPF Actually Mean?

To calculate SPF, it’s a simple formula.

1. Cover skin with sunscreen
2. How many seconds does it take for the skin to slightly redden
3. Divided by how many seconds it takes to redden without sunscreen

Say it took 300 seconds for skin to burn with sunscreen, and 10 seconds to burn without it. 300 is divided by 10, which is 30. The SPF is 30.

How Much Better Is SPF50 than SPF30?

Bigger is not always better. SPF50 filters 98% of UVB, and SPF30 filters 96.7%.

There is only a 1.3% difference between SPF50 and SPF30

The thing is, when it comes to how the different sunscreens feel on your skin (which impacts how likely you’ll want to re-apply), it’s vastly different. SPF50+ is so much thicker to achieve that 1.3% better coverage that it oftentimes is counter-productive to protecting your skin.
