We found multiple flights to Cancun in the neighborhood of $1,200. We are highlighting the American Airlines flight for 50k points giving you $0.034 per point.
Our first stop was Aeromexico with a $1,060 flight that lists for 108k points plus $100 fee giving you $0.009 per point. This is simply too many points with too little a points value to consider.
Next we searched Delta and found a $1,135 flight for 70k points plus $100 fee giving you $0.016 per point. Again, the number of points required and low per point rate is not a great value.
When we searched United we found a $1,200 flight for 60k points giving you $0.02 per point. While this is better than our first 2 results, we still feel a little ho-hum about it.
Our search on Alaska netted us a $2,650 flight for 55k points plus $120 fee giving you $0.048. This option has advantages given the lower points price and higher points rate. Plus, your AAdvantage miles will transfer because it is a co-branded flight between Alaska and American. However, you would have $120 in fees per person which really adds up with a family.
We searched American and came up with a $1,700 flight for 50k points giving you $0.034 per point. We like this option for its lack of fees, decent per point rate, and costing the fewest points.
To redeem this flight, simply log into your AAdvantage account or Citi Travel Portal and book your flight.
Based on the current cards you have, our recommendation is to get the Citi Premiere card which has a 60k sign up bonus, easily enough points for a Business Class flight to Cancun. This card also offers 3x travel points.
