Lake Siegel Bell is an American actress, writer and director. She has starred in the television series Boston Legal (2004–06), Surface (2005–06), How to Make It in America (2010–11) and Childrens Hospital (2008–present) and in the films Over Her Dead Body (2008), What Happens in Vegas (2008), It’s Complicated (2009), No Strings Attached (2011) and Million Dollar Arm (2014). She wrote and directed the short film Worst Enemy, which debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012, followed by her feature film directing debut In a World… in 2013, in which she also starred.

Lake Bell Biography

Bell was born on March 24, 1979, to parent Harvey Siegel and Robin Bell, in New York. Her mother is the owner of the design firm Robin Bell Design. Her father is a real estate developer, who bought Virginia International Raceway, which was then-closed, and converted it into a racetrack country club, and he also owned New Jersey Motorsports Park.

Bell’s father is Jewish and her mother is a Protestant. Bell stated the she was raised in a “comically dysfunctional family.”

She attended The Chapin School in New York and then Westminster School in Simsbury, Connecticut. Part of the time when she was a teenager, she lived in Vero Beach, Florida and went to Saint Edwards School. She then attended Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, New York for her higher education, but transferred to Rose Bruford College in London. While in London she acted in several theatrical productions like; The Seagull, The Children’s Hour, Six Degrees of Separation, Light Shining in Buckinghamshire and Pentecost.

Bell started her acting career in 2002. She landed a role in her first film, Speakeasy. She also had a guest role in two episode of ER. Although she started acting in 2002, her significant roles came in 2003. After appearing in the film, I Love Your Work, a psychological thriller, she the got casted as the female lead in the television film, War Stories, alongside Jeff Goldblum. She then played Victoria Carlson, Alicia Silverstone’s best friend in the comedy-drama series Miss Match. She made her debut as Sally Heep in the last four episode of The Practice. Sally Heep was carried over into the spinoff Boston Legal, becoming a regular cast member until she left in 2005, but she returned in 2006, for two episodes.

Starting 2005, She began landing lead roles, like in the science fiction series, Surface, from September 2005 to May 2006. In 2006, she starred in Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders, a film about the The Hillside Strangler of the 1970s. She also portrayed the female lead of the thriller film, Under Still Waters, for which she won an award, the Newport Beach Film Festival Award for Outstanding Performance in Acting. She was also cast as the lead female role in Rob Corddry’s Childrens Hospital, playing as Dr. Cat Black. She also directed two episodes of the fourth season of this series, the series premiere, and the ninth episode. This was not her directorial debut though. She voiced the role of Dana Mercer in the game Prototype.

She is also a writer and director. She made her writing and directing debut with the short film Worst Enemy, which first showed at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, then was also shown at the Nantucket Film Festival, the Dallas International Film Festival, the Gen Art Film Festival, and Aspen Shortfest. Her film won the Tony Cox Award for Screenwriting in a Short Film from Nantucket, and receiving a Shorts Jury Special Mention from Dallas. Bell made her feature film debut at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, with the movie, In A World… in which she starred in, wrote, and directed.

She is also a model and has appeared in a lot of magazines, including Marie Claire, Elle, Los Angeles, Maxim, Esquire, and New York.

Bell has an automotive column in The Hollywood Reporter called Test Drive and is the magazine’s automotive contributing editor.

Lake Bell briefly dated her Pride and Glory co-star, Colin Farrell. In 2011, she began dating Scott Campbell, an artist and tattoo artist. They got engaged on Bell’s birthday in March 2012, and they got married on June 1, 2013 at the Marigny Opera House in New Orleans, Lousiana. They have a daughter, Nova, born in October 2014.
