Rolex was founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf, at the age of 24. Hans founded the company in London and specialized in the distribution (rather than manufacture) of timepieces. Hans had a vision for a timepiece that was not only elegant, but reliable. In 1905, the ability for a machine to keep accurate time was akin to the latest iPhone in terms of technological innovation.
In 1910, Rolex was the first wristwatch in the world to receive the Swiss Certificate of Chronometric Precision. Four years on, in 1914, the Kew Observatory in Great Britain awarded Rolex a class A precision certificate. Which at that time, was reserved exclusively for marine chronometers. From that day forward, the Rolex wristwatch was synonymous with precision.
The name Rolex is not a family name, but rather came from Mr. Wilsdorf attempt at creating a name that exuded quality and elegance. "One morning, while riding on the upper deck of a horse-drawn omnibus along Cheapside in the City of London, a genie whispered ‘Rolex’ in my ear."
