Choose Harry’s Razors for a quality shave

You may be one of the few who not have heard of Harry’s Razors, the NY based e-commerce start-up that is creating quite a buzz in the Men’s Hygiene world. Harry’s Razors was founded by two long-time friends, Jeff Raider and Andy Katz-Mayfield, who met as college interns at a management consulting firm in Boston while studying at Johns Hopkins and Duke respectively. The duo founded the company because of their dissatisfaction with the inadequate state of the 2.4 billion dollar grossing US Shaving industry, which is largely dominated by Schick and Gillette. They felt that men were too often faced with a decision between a cheap, but low-quality, razor and an over-priced deluxe razor. Tired of this, they were inspired to found Harry’s Razor. Both men possess business experience, (from their MBA studies at Wharton – Raider – and Stanford – Katz – to their prior job experience as a co-founder of wildly successful Warby Parker for Raider, and a position with NBA Marketing and operations for Katz-Mayfield), so the decision to start Harry’s wasn’t a huge leap.

The company is founded on the principles of providing excellent shaves at affordable prices while also giving back to the community.  One percent of the proceeds go to charitable organizations and one percent of their time goes to volunteering. For quality, they went the way of BMW and Daimler, using a German factory, purchased with 100 million of the 122.5 million dollars they raised in funding. According to their website, their five blade razors and razor handles were designed to “blend timeless simplicity and modern ergonomics” and their shaving cream was created “by the same chemists who make creams for high-end brands” which results in “a set of modern shaving products with respect for the tradition of a good, clean shave”.

The Winston

The Truman

Harry’s offers two shaving kits, the Truman ($15) and the Winston ($25), which both come with 3 blades and a tube of shaving cream and only differ in the blade handles. They are advertised as “a month of shaving in a tiny box”. The Truman handle is made of a curved zinc alloy rod interior core and a blend of high quality polymer and waterproof lacquer that form the smooth exterior and was designed to offer comfort and control. It can be purchased in orange, navy, ivory, and olive. The Winston handle is made of lightweight aluminum alloys apparently “similar to those found in a modern aircraft” and was design to offer dependable performance and lightweight control. It can be purchased in only one color, silver – reminiscent of stainless steel. The blade head on these handles all have five razors which are shaped into a “gothic arch” pattern like the dome or spire of an old church and have the ability to flex when placed against your skin, with similar dynamics to a paintbrush against a canvas, according to the site. The blade heads also feature a small band of Aloe Vera and Vitamin E to help nourish and moisturize your skin. Head over to Harry’s well-designed website and pick up a kit or merely a razor for a great shave at an affordable price.
