Layer Up: The Cardigan

Layering is essential in sophisticated cool.  An updated cardigan, the right button up, the perfect overcoat, these all come into play when you’re putting together the perfect winter outfit.  Layering serves several purposes; first, it keeps your ready for whatever the day throws at you weather-wise, and second, if done right, it can elevate an outfit from a simple jeans and button up combo to a damn good look that people will notice.  One of the easiest things to layer, especially is you’re new to enhancing your sartorial game, is the cardigan.  We aren’t talking about something you’d find in Mr. Rogers closet, but a sweater that will help cut the perfect silhouette and look good paired with some perfectly slim denim.  Here are a few of our favorite Combatant Gentlemen cardigans, paired with the right stuff to keep you looking undoubtably dapper.

Layer Your Cardigan, Look #1

The loud gingham print and colors is the perfect combination with the muted ash grey cardigan.  It’s far from over-the-top, but it makes the statement that you know what you’re doing.  Pair it with these Combatant Gentlemen slim fit jeans and some brown boots or wingtips and your layered look is complete.

Mixing Blues makes this cardigan/shirt combo a great match.  Pair it with these slim fit black selvage denim jeans and this Italian wool peacoat and you’re winter ready.  The darkness of the jeans balances out the boldness of the cobalt blue well, and the grey peacoat ties it all together while keeping you warm.

Layer Your Cardigan, Look #3

For the man who doesn’t look patterns.  The maroon cardigan pairs well with the toned down indigo button up without looking too Fourth of July, while the grey denim adds that edge to keep the outfit modern.  Pair it with some dark brown boots and this might be your new favorite outfit.

We understand some men like their sweaters without the buttons, and cardigans just aren’t for everyone.  For those we point you to Combatant Gentlemen’s V-neck line.  Offered in the same colors as the cardigans, and constructed with a soft cotton-cashmere blend, these are the best sweaters you will ever pull over your head for $45 (currently $33 on sale!)  Pair them with some well-fitting button ups and the right pair of chinos and you have a look that can transition from the office to the bar with no hassle.  Here’s how we’d wear them.

V-Neck Done Right, Look #1

Sometimes you just can’t beat the classics, and black and white is definitely a tried-and-true classic.  Pair it with some crisp denim, like the indigo selvage jeans we’ve pictured here, and this truly perfect Italian wool overcoat and you’re set.

V-Neck Done Right, Look #3

It’s good to get out of your comfort zone from time to time, and an easy way to do that is to mix colors you might not wear every day.  Try this forest green button up paired with these chocolate brown slim straight chinos.  Throw on the cobalt blue cardigan to tie it all together and you have a new outfit that will set you apart from the masses without looking too wild.

Layering, Minus the Sweater

Sweaters are one of the easiest pieces to layer with, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get the same layered feel without one.  A scarf and the right coat can give you the same type of look without the added warmth.  Here are a few of our pairing suggestions when you want to leave the sweater at home.

Sweaterless Layering, Look #1

We chose a heavier flannel button up to make up for the loss of the sweater, meaning you won’t sacrifice comfort for style during the winter months.  Throw the Italian wool overcoat on top for the trendy grey-on-grey look, tie it together with this maroon and plaid scarf, and lighten up the whole outfit a bit with these ash navy chinos.  This perfect updated outdoorsman look will work in almost any environment, and the fact that this shirt will be one of the most comfortable ones you own is just an added bonus.

Sweaterless Layering, Look #2

The red chambray button up under the peacoat adds some great texture and a pop of color, while the peacoat itself keeps the outfit understated and cool.  Throw in the indigo denim and a two-toned blue scarf to tie it all together and you have an updated version of a classically perfect look.  And that is what you should always be striving for.

Sweaterless Layering, Look #3

Layering doesn’t always have to be about stacking colors and patterns, sometimes the most crisp looks are the most simple.  Here in New York we know that a good black outfit is a staple in any wardrobe, and here is the perfect way to do it.  The black selvage denim keeps the bottom half dark and put together, while the gingham print adds some depth to the outfit.  Top it off the with Italian wool overcoat and pull it together with this black and grey scarf and you’re ready for the night.
