After being named one of the best new hotels in 2017, I knew I had to check out Scribner’s for myself.
It’s only a quick 2.5 hours from New York, but an entire world away.
Waking up to the crisp mountain air and serenity of the mountains was an excellent escape from the commotion in New York.
The property is located in Hunter, NY, which according to Google maps is about a 2.5 hour drive.
The easiest and fastest way to get to Hunter, NY is by renting a car.
We used SilverCar to pick up a tricked out Audi A4, and the trip was seamless.
If you plan to rent from SilverCar, make sure to pick up the car as close to New Jersey as you can.
It took us 1 hour to get from Brooklyn to the Holland Tunnel, and then only 2 hours to make it all the way to the Catskills.
@Threadtherapy and I aren’t the biggest fans of driving, and looked into taking the train as well. Amtrack takes you up to Hudson, NY, which is about a 2 hour ride (during which you can imbibe and catch up on any of your favorite Netflix shows).
The thing is, from Hudson, it’s another 45 minute cab ride. So if you go this route, make sure to schedule a cab in advance to pick you up from the aiport (Scribner’s staff can definitely help with this).
For any future trips, we’ll probably take the train for the relaxation from the wheel, and the fact we take an Uber almost everywhere.
Since we went during the offseason, the nightly rate was only $200, which is an absolute steal.
During peak season, January-March, the price only jumps to $250.
Since this is such a high-end lodge, I definitely expected to see pricing in the $500 range, which is how I value this property.
When you book the hotel, let them know I sent you.
Hunter is a small town. The most recent census puts the population at 500 people. And the town itself probably has a total of 5 restaurants.
The best, and only restaurant worth visiting (for breakfast lunch AND DINNER) is Prospect.

We ate here for every meal for our 2 day trip and loved it.
The prices are high for Hunter, NY but fair compared to NYC pricing.
The cocktails are all handcrafted and made with local ingredients.
The bar itself has an excellent selection of whiskeys, gin, tequilas, etc.
I even saw a couple bottles of Pappy Van Winkle in their store room.
The property itself is pretty big, with a total of 38 rooms, and was recently completed in 2016, so everything is fresh, clean and perfectly maintained.
Our room had a fireplace, a lofted bed, and plenty of room to lounge.
My favorite feature in any hotel room is a rainfall shower, and Scribner’s did not disappoint.
All of the products in the room are locally produced and are world-changing. We bought 2 bottles of the rosemary and mint bath lather, and now every time we take a shower, we’ll be brought back to that beautiful mountain vista.
On the property, there is a lounge area, complete with a fireplace and plenty of games.
We played Monopoly Deal and Cards Against Humanity (CAH).
The hotel is so laid and welcoming, it was completely welcome that we continue our CAH at our table for dinner.
There’s nothing more fun than knocking back Catskill IPAs and dominating at Cards Against Humanity.
Thank you again to Allen for an awesome dining experience (he waited on us for almost every meal and was amazing).
For this reason alone, I loved this property.
I did have some feedback for the property in terms of what they can improve, and considering the hotel is so new, I would expect this to be addressed on future visits:
I was doing some research on what to wear to a ski lodge, and came across a lot of Apres-Ski attire which consisted of Moncler jackets and big chunky scarves.
Since this is Upstate NY and not the Swiss Alps, I went with more of a Brooklyn-lodge vibe.
Comfort was my number one goal, so I went with a lot of loose fitting pieces that were easy to transition into napwear.

Since we came during Spring, we were a bit limited on activities.
If you visit in Winter, there is skiing available right across the street.
During Spring and Fall, there are a ton of hiking destinations.
For our trip, since it rained the entire day of Saturday, our activities were contained to games in the Scribner’s lounge.
I personally loved this experience, and didn’t feel the need to ever leave the property.
So if you want a super relaxing, get out of town experience, Scribner’s has everything you need.
Unless you’re a high roller, playing pokies for a few hours will cost you the same as when you go out to see a movie or any other form of affordable entertainment.
