Gugulethu Sophia Mbatha was her full birth name and she a perfect mix of Caucasian and South African ancestry. Her parents were separated when she was young and grew up with her mother in Witney, Oxfordshire.

 

Gugu always wanted to be an actress at the age of 11. She strongly remembered her mother working so hard on a job she never liked and Gugu vowed to work hard on something she will enjoy.

 

At 11, she started appearing in pantomime at Oxford Playhouse. During her teens, she played the saxophone and joined the Oxford Youth Music Theatre.

 

Luckily, she won a scholarship to attend the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London.

 

Her other credits include roles in “MI-5,” “Touch,” “Dr. Who,” “Jupiter Rising” and “Larry Crowne,” among others.

 

Playing as “Belle” was a bit difficult for her since she wasn’t used to wearing corsets. It took her a while before she felt comfortable with wearing corsets.

 

Gugu Mbatha-Raw shared that she would love to play Cleopatra. “That is a role I have had my eye on for a long time. I would love to tell an apartheid story.” She said in a separate interview, “I try not to define myself. Other people are going to do that for you. I like being free to take on any project that inspires me and to trust that the work will speak for itself.”

 

Gugu is now living in Los Angeles and still remains unmarried at the time being.
