Chelsea Handler is an American comedian, actress, best-selling author, and producer, best known for her show “Chelsea Lately”, on the E! network from 2007 to 2014.
Since leaving the show in 2014, Chelsea has been pursuing more challenging projects, including the production of a documentary series for Netflix.
She has a knack for creating controversy, such as posing topless on her Instagram account, and getting her photos banned for nudity.
In 2012, TIME magazine placed Chelsea on its list of the 100 Most Influential People. She was also ranked twice in Maxim magazine’s Hot 100, ranking at No.91 in 2009, and No.87 in 2010, and at No.98 in the Forbes Celebrity 100.
Chelsea Handler Biography
Chelsea Joy Handler was born in New Jersey, USA to a mother who was a Mormon, and a father who was Jewish, making Chelsea a mess. She was raised in Reform Judaism and had a Bat Mitzvah ceremony.
Born as the youngest of six children, with three brothers and two sisters, Chelsea is now said to be the caretaker of the family.
Chelsea openly admits to having an abortion at the age of 16. She discussed it in a 2011 interview with the The New York Times, claiming that “those are the things that people shouldn’t be dishonest about”.
At the age of 19, Chelsea moved to LA to pursue her dream of becoming an actress. In order to support herself whilst waiting for her dreams to come true, she waited tables.
At 21, after being arrested for a DUI, Chelsea was forced to take a DUI class as punishment, but began to earn laughs from her classmates. This ability to make other people laugh inspired her to take to the stage as a stand-up comedian.
Five years later, at the age of 26, Chelsea finally found full-time work in the entertainment industry, and was able to quit waiting tables. She later recalled, “I remember having a conversation with my sister, saying: ‘What if I don’t make it? What if I’m still waiting tables when I’m 35’? I was just at the end of my rope. But I’ve been at the end of that rope several times.”
In 2002, Chelsea Handler landed a role in the hidden camera cable show “Girls Behaving Badly”, which ran until 2005. This newly found exposure earned her guest roles on popular shows such as “The Practice”, “The Bernie Mac Show”, and “My Wife and Kids”.
Chelsea’s biggest breakthrough moment came in 2007, when she started hosting her own late-night talk show, “Chelsea Lately”, on the E! network.
Despite sometimes courting controversy, the show proved a big hit, especially with women aged between 18 and 34, often drawing more women viewers in that age range than her male competitors.
The show ran until 2014, although Chelsea later stated that she had become tired of its tabloid-style discussions much earlier than that.
As well as being an accomplished actress and comedian, Chelsea is also a successful writer. Her first book, “My Horizontal Life: A Collection of One Night Stands,” hit the best-sellers list, and followed her real-life sexual exploits. Her follow-up books, “Are You There, Vodka? It’s Me Chelsea” and “Chelsea Bang Bang” were also smash hits.
In total, she has had five books featured on the New York Times Best Seller List, with four of them reaching the coveted No.1 spot, making Chelsea Handler a true multi-talented artist.
Despite her ability to make people laugh, Chelsea isn’t one to shy away from more serious subjects. In 2009, she received the “Ally for Equality Award” from the Human Rights Campaign, for her work in bettering the lives of LGBT people.
Staying true to her desire not to shy away from more serious issues, Chelsea Handler produced a four part documentary series for Netflix, released in January 2016. The series tackles subjects such as marriage, Silicon Valley, racism, and drugs.
