In May 1955, Berry ventured out to Chicago, where he met Muddy Waters, who proposed he contact Leonard Chess, of Chess Records. Chess had seen the musicality and blues advertise shrivel and was hoping to move past it, and he thought Berry may be the craftsman for that reason.

Berry sang in a congregation choir and a school merriment club and took up the guitar in middle school, figuring out how to play all alone.
